My First Live Pro Wrestling Event—a Night that Changed the WWE for Forever.
Before we step into the ring, let me set the stage.
I was fourteen years old, fully consumed by my obsession with professional wrestling, specifically WWE. Every summer, I stayed with my mother, who, for a few years, lived in Las Vegas with her partner. She was the outgoing type, the kind of person who saw time as something to be filled, cramming every moment with adventure for her three boys.
The summer of 2011 marked a very special one for us, but not only us—it also happened to be “The Summer of Punk.”
I woke up to my mother’s voice, her excitement slicing through sleep like a finishing move. It felt like any other loud summer morning with her, the kind of energy that meant we were about to be dragged on another one of her adventures.
“Boys, boys, wake up! You won’t believe this!” Mom exclaimed.
She was acting like she had pulled off the impossible. And, we had no choice so it was time to finally get up for the day.
“MOM stop!” I groaned.
“Guess where we’re going tonight!” she responds.
Most of the time, this meant another hiking trail, another restaurant she swore we’d love, but we’d spend half the meal wishing we were home playing video games.
“We’re going to Monday Night Raw!” Mom reveals.
THAT woke us up!
We shot up, eyes locking in disbelief.
“No. Fucking. Way.” my brother says to me.
“Hey! No! You can’t say that!” she snapped.
The words hit us like a jolt of Mountain Dew Code Red straight to the bloodstream. Without thinking, we jumped into action. A spontaneous brawl on the bed broke out, an unspoken choreography only brothers and the best tag teams could pull off.
In that moment, we were the Hardy Boyz.
“C’mon I’ll show you” she says as she exits the room.
We followed.
On the TV, WWE superstar Alberto Del Rio sat on a Las Vegas morning news show, smooth as ever, promoting that night’s Monday Night Raw at the “Thomas & Mack Center.”
“Boys, we just won” Mom says.
“What?” I respond.
“We just won four tickets to the show tonight” she says with teary-eyes.
“No way!” we react in excitement.
She rewound the show to prove it, and there it was, the moment frozen in time. Our golden ticket. The day had already felt surreal, but now, it was something else entirely.
I wondered how the show was going to be that night. Here, let me show you.
